Starting the interview with Ralph Stanley was not an easy part of this project. Not that he wasn't a good conversationalist, but after getting through all of my fanboy questions and fawning attempts to discuss him, he finally opened up when the topic turned to the Carter Family. It wasn't even that this album was all Carter Family music and he wanted to promote it, but that he was such a huge fan that playing these songs made him a giddy fanboy. These were his rock stars when he was a boy, and it was clear that not much had changed in his opinion of them.
My deep gratitude goes to Margie Hunt, formerly at Sony Nashville, for making the introductions that allowed this project to happen, plus she brought in the the lovely Carlene Carter to host.
