I love making programs about history, whether musical, political, cultural, you name it. Talking with Ken Burns and Lynne Novick about how they approached this documentary was a real pleasure. Plus, getting a pile of archival materials to round out the ideas - icing on the cake. Like I try to do with all the programming, the songs in this special ended up being breathers between our conversations about history, storytelling, and the responsibilities involved in translating experiences into broadcast.
